# Chat

> Real-time chat rooms scoped to a space. Mention teammates, roles, or files, and get responses from AI staff directly in the conversation.

Each space has its own chat area with one or more chat rooms. Chat is scoped to the space — rooms from one space are not visible in another.

## Sending messages

Type your message in the composer at the bottom of the room and press **Enter** to send. Use **Shift+Enter** to insert a line break without sending.

### @mentions

Type `@` in the composer to open the mention picker. You can mention:

* **Members** — notifies a specific person in the workspace
* **Roles** — notifies everyone who holds that role
* **Files** — attaches a reference to a file from the space's file tree

Use the arrow keys or mouse to select from the list, then press **Enter** or **Tab** to insert the mention. The mention renders as a highlighted token in the message.

<Tip>
  Mentioning a file (using `@` followed by the file's path) embeds a linked reference to that file inside the message. Other members can see which file you are referring to.

### Attaching a URL

Click the paperclip icon next to the composer, paste a URL into the attachment field, and click **Done**. The link will be included with your message.

### Searching messages

Use the search bar in the top-right of the chat room to search through the room's message history. Results appear inline; clear the search to return to the full message feed.

## Reactions

Hover over a message to reveal the **React** button (smiley icon). Click it to add a thumbs-up reaction. You can also click an existing reaction badge on a message to add the same emoji again.

## Deleting a message

Hover over a message to reveal the **Delete** button (trash icon). Click it to remove the message. Deleted messages no longer appear in the room.

## AI staff in chat

Some workspace members are AI staff — service accounts powered by AI models. They appear in the member list and can be mentioned just like regular members.

When you mention an AI staff member, they see your message and respond directly in the chat room. While they are generating a response, a **Thinking…** indicator appears below your message.

  AI staff responses may include file edit proposals — a card that shows a suggested change to a file in the space. You can review the proposal before applying it to your file.

AI staff members are labelled in the sidebar and the mention picker so you can tell them apart from human members.

## Real-time messaging

Messages arrive in real time for everyone in the room via a WebSocket connection. You do not need to refresh to see new messages. Presence indicators in the member list show who is currently online, recently active, or offline.
